ALBION RIVER CAMPGROUND

21 August 2008 FISHING REPORT

FISHING REPORT

Water conditions started to improve on Friday but the drift continued to be really fast. You needed big weights to stay anywhere near to bottom. Saturday brought more improvements but wind would blow and the stop. Some fishermen brought in some big vermillion all from the same areas that we have been fishing the last two and one-half months. Sunday through Wednesday were the better days with an almost flat sea and little wind. They were also a better days for fish. Black and blue rockfish were not as big as the vermilions but were a decent size. Several lingcods were brought in also with the biggest over 19 pounds. Finally we have a change in the derby standings.

We had lots of this on Saturday.
We also had this on Sunday.
We also had some nice fish brought in.
Jack had to get out there also.
They must know me!
Target fish or fish targets.
Gene and his record size lingcod for the derby, 19 lbs, 17 ozs.
Vermillion are still comming in.
Fish cleaning class 101 for some new fishermen to the area.
Oscar would prefer salmon to rockfish. So would we!

Diving Report

Our kelp forest continues to be a problem for divers. Divers are still not able to get to lots of the shallower rock formations. Anything shallower than 15 feet was almost impenetrable. Visibility was also a problem with Albion Bay reported to be the worse with nearly none. Dark Gulch visibility was generally better at maybe eight feet.

Some of the Sunday divers went south to Elk for their abalone. It was a beautiful day for a boat ride. Visibility was reported to be at least 15 feet or better down there. All of their abs were big and deep with the largest at 10 1/4 inches.

Story worth repeating

Some divers have a strong instinct to help beginners and older divers by getting abalone for them. That is illegal according to Fish and Game rules for both the "taker" and the "takee" (a nice doubling of tickets and fines). Fort Bragg Advocate News continues to print a long list of the people who get tickets and the healthy fines for violations of fish and Game regulations. It is better to stick to the rules. That way we won't be paying any more big fines. So, don't get abalone except for yourself and don't take any from another diver, either. Poaching continues to be a lucrative business on the north coast for both pochers and courts. Several dozen fresh empty ab shells were reported to be on the bottom of the bay next door at Salmon Creek.

What happens to an abalone when its shell is cracked? It survives until a diver finds him! Notice where mother-of-peral has coated the split area. Damage like this usually happens when the rock they are on gets rolled around during a storm.
How are these for ablone. One of then is 10 1/4 inches. Which one is it? They all look close to that to me. These abs are from down around Elk where fewers divers get to and the water was reported to be more clear. They were in 15 feet of water too.
This of course is the big one.
They all get skined for dinner.

Kayaking and Canoeing on the Albion River

No problem for paddling space at high tide.
Letting the current take them up stream.
Paddles at rest.
At least the canoers want to go some place.

Albion River Kids

Maybe the crabs hang on for the elevator ride to the top.
One busy father with all those fisherkids.
He must remove the bullheads also.
Waiting for a bite.

Halaua O Ka Ua Lililehua

Some of the campground guests over the weekend were from the Halau O Ka Ua Lililehua dance school of San Leandro. They usually perform one Hawaiian dance before leaving. This was their fifth year to meet at Albion.
They usually practice daily until their performance on Sunday.
Waiting for the music to start.
This year's performance is with gourds from Hawaii.
Sorry but we have no translation of their movements.
Continuing the story.
Mikioi the instructor.
Another movement that Mikioi knows the meaning of.
Facing Hawaii on a beautiful clear day at Albion. Hawaii is only as far away as our minds will let it be.
A hui hou

We enjoyed the ladies performance immencely. We hope they enjoy the photos when the CD gets there as much as we enjoyed their company.

Lingcod Derby for 2008

Chase Campbell has started the lingcod derby for 2008. The signup sheet is in the office. Derby fishing period is 15 June through 15 September. Chase now has the official scale, just like Charlie's, in the office. Office hours are 7 AM to 3:45 PM. After that you can get Chase from the house and he will come back to the office. Otherwise, ice your fish down down for the night. Names of the fishermen with the three biggest lingcod are listed below. (Names will be added when the big ones start coming in. Fall is better lingcod fishing.)

Now we are cooking. All the spots are now occupied.

First Place: Gene Myers, 19 pounds, 17 ounces.

Second Place: Bill Kenner, 15 pounds, 14 ounces.

Third Place: Shelden Shad, 15 pounds

Halibut Fishing

We are investigating when and where to fish for halibut in our area to possibly find an alternate fishing experience. We know they are in the area but details of their habits are limited. We will keep you posted on our discoveries. Any advice gladly accepted from people who have been there and done that. We would also like inputs on shrimp fishing along our coast.

If we wish to continue fishing we must find something that state and federal regulators are not trying to close down. It appears to me that bottom fishing would have been closed this season if not for the salmon closure. An article in the Advocate-News (May 13, 2008) indicates that Yelloweye Rockfish will continue being impacted instead of local communities.
